Choose the collar for the occasion first, then confirm its height, shape and stiffness with your tailor.
The band (ban) collar
A band collar is a short standing collar without folded points. It gives a clean, traditional line and suits kurtas and shalwar kameez for Jummah, Eid, weddings and evening events. With a waistcoat it looks particularly neat because there are no collar points competing with the waistcoat's neckline.
Discuss the height: a slightly taller band looks more formal, a lower one feels relaxed in hot weather. A firmer interlining keeps the band upright after washing; a softer one feels lighter but may need more pressing.
The classic shirt collar
A classic or shirt collar has folded points like a formal shirt. Many men prefer it for office wear and daily routines because it looks familiar with a jacket and sits well when the top button is open.
Ask about point length and spread. Longer points look more formal; shorter points feel modern and casual. If you often wear the collar open, mention it so the placket and button position look right that way.
Match the collar to the occasion and fabric
As a simple rule: band collar for occasions and traditional looks, shirt collar for the office and everyday wear. Fabric matters too. A crisp cotton or wash & wear holds either collar well, while a very soft or light fabric may need a firmer interlining for the collar to keep its shape.
- Office and daily wear: shirt collar, regular fit, wash & wear or cotton
- Jummah and Eid: band collar in cotton or a light blend
- Wedding functions: band collar with a deeper colour, often under a waistcoat
Explain it clearly to your tailor
Bring a photo of a collar you like, or an old kameez whose collar you are happy with. Mention the neck measurement and whether you like the collar close or slightly loose. These small details make the difference between a collar you keep adjusting and one you forget about.
