Bring a fabric sample, describe your routine, and choose the fit and care requirements together.
Start with your routine
Tell the tailor how you will wear the outfit. Do you spend most of the day outdoors, sit at a desk, or need something for an occasion? Ask to feel the fabric, hold it against the light and see how it falls. Weight, weave and finishing can change the feel even when two fabrics carry the same name.
- For everyday wear, prioritise comfortable movement and a care routine you can maintain.
- For office wear, compare how the sample drapes around a collar and sleeve.
- For an occasion, consider the light, the setting and the footwear you will wear.
Consider the actual cotton or linen sample
Cotton is a familiar starting point for a shalwar kameez, but a light weave and a heavier weave will not feel the same. Ask about the fibre composition and whether any preparation is needed before cutting. Do not assume every cotton fabric has already been treated for shrinkage.
Linen can be a useful option for warm-weather dressing. Its texture and natural creasing are part of the look, so consider whether you enjoy a more relaxed finish. A linen blend may behave differently from pure linen; check the composition and care instructions.
Read beyond “wash & wear”
Treat “wash & wear” as a starting description, then ask what the fabric contains. For example, Alkaram offers men's blended fabrics made with polyester and viscose. That does not mean every fabric sold under a similar description has the same blend, feel or washing requirements.
Ask the seller for the specific composition and care guidance. Compare samples in your hand and discuss the silhouette you want before buying enough material for the outfit.
Have the conversation before cutting
Share your fabric with Shahzad Tailors before the design is finalised. We can discuss your preferred collar, fit and finishing, then confirm the required fabric length, quote and delivery availability. If preparation is needed, agree on the method before cutting rather than soaking an unfamiliar fabric on guesswork.
