THE TAKEAWAY

Keep the supplier's care instructions with your fabric details. When a label or instruction is unclear, ask before washing or pressing.

Read before washing

Care symbols cover washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional cleaning. GINETEX explains that these instructions describe the permitted treatment; a hotter wash or a higher iron setting is not an automatic improvement.

For an outfit stitched from unstitched fabric, keep the supplier's instructions and ask about any added lining or decoration. If the garment requires professional cleaning, tell the cleaner about its materials and details.

Understand cotton and wash & wear before choosing a care routine

Choose a routine for that garment

Follow the specified wash method, temperature and drying instructions. Avoid assuming that a gentle-looking fabric can be soaked or that every dark outfit can be washed with everything else. Check pockets and close any fastenings as appropriate before washing.

For linen garments that permit washing, the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp recommends gentle treatment, mild detergent and careful drying. It also advises checking the label first, because construction details can change the required care. Do not apply linen instructions to an unidentified blend.

Press with care

Use the iron setting permitted by the care instructions. Pay attention to collars, cuffs, embroidery and any fused or decorative parts. Test a permitted pressing method in an inconspicuous area and stop if the surface changes.

Linen that permits ironing can often be easier to press while slightly damp, but the garment's instructions still take priority. Do not assume the steam or temperature suitable for linen is suitable for synthetic blends.

Put it away ready for next time

Make sure the outfit is dry before storage. Choose a hanger or fold that supports its shape without crowding it into a small space. Before the next occasion, check buttons, seams and the fit with enough time to discuss any repair or adjustment.

If you need advice about an outfit stitched by Shahzad Tailors, send the team its fabric details and a clear description of your question. For an unknown material or delicate finish, the fabric supplier or a professional cleaner may need to advise on treatment.
